The Gift

Wow, a secret little gem! Bought this movie for a £1 from a thrift store a few years back and only just got around to watching it. I was expecting it to be a predictable, low-budget flick with a C-list cast. Not at all, this is a brilliant slow-paced thriller that keeps you watching and guessing [spoiler] (I have to admit the killer was the first person I suspected towards the start but the movie does a fab job of keeping you guessing and I certainly kept changing my mind in the second half). I loved the ending with Buddy and the little twist there!! [/spoiler] Cate was as fantastic as she always is, in fact the whole cast was brilliant - all of the characters were very human and believable.

Well-written mystery thriller with a wholesome 90s vibe and Katie Holmes' boobs thrown into the mix - can't go wrong here!

I think the movie is actually pretty good. I was never really bored during it, which definitely says a lot since I have a hard time sitting through movies that are over an hour and a half. The plot seems a little obvious in certain parts, but in others it's quite surprising. The cast was interesting to watch and the characters seemed fairly realistic. The visions were interestingly done, though they were slightly confusing at times. Overall it was imaginative and enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this one. It´s a good, classic thriller with some mystery attached. A solid story, co-written by Billy Bob Thornton, nothing fancy, with a convincing Cate Blanchett.

A solid southern gothic thriller, whose impact is amplified by the frenetic stylized filmmaking of Sam Raimi and a star-making lead performance from Blanchette. It's also a nice treat to see Keanu play such a bastard.

film.. dziwny.. do pierwszej połowy może nie zbyt nudnawy, ale nudnawy, choć nie nużący.. ot.. bita żona zgłasza się do wróżki po poradę, i dowiaduje się, że ma myśleć o rozwodzie.. wróżka jeździ rozklekotanym wozem i poratowytuje chorego psychicznie mechanika.. nudy.. nauczyciel ze szkoły wiąże się z atrakcyjną, jak się później okazuje, dla wielu, panienką.. zaczyna się robić ciekawiej, gdy panienka zostaje zamordowana, wróżka ma wizję, w której ciało ląduje w stawie tego samego damskiego boksera od którego nie może odejść żona.. tia.. robi się ciekawiej.. wizja goni wizję.. ciało rzeczywiście jest tam gdzie ma być.. piękne widoki, zdjęcia.. a później film zaczyna na maxa irytować, gdy chory psychicznie zmuszany przez wróżkę ma przypominieć sobie ojca, wpada na pomysł, że był molestowany i tegoż ojca podpala.. klasyczny przykład, że mając swoje nierozwiązane problemy (nieuporanie się ze śmiercią męża), nie wolno brać się za rozgrzebywanie innych.. więc całe szczęście, że ja olewam swoją robotę, i nikogo nie rozgrzebuję.. ale wątek wkurzył mnie na maxa.. później film staje się rewelacjny.. kolejna wizja.. zabił nie ten, który jest w więzieniu.. najciekawsza scena, gdy.. na pograniczu wizji, psychozy?... wróżka widzi, jak pomaga jej chory psychicznie, który pomóc jej nie mógł, bo już nie żył, popełnił samobóstwo w szpitalu, ale zostawia jej/ oddaje chustkę męża, którą sama dawała mu znacznie wcześniej.. tia... moje skojarzenie?.. moja psychoza/ wizja i.. nabazgrany na kartce prawdziwy adres człowieka, w którym byłam zakochana.. i gdyby nie ten adres uwierzyłabym, że to wizja..
no dobra.. film... fabuła fabuła, fabuła.. made in america, więc tia.. prawie zero emocji.. dużo efektów.. malownicze sceny.. i ważna FABUŁA... nie znoszę takich filmów.. zostaje- miazga... nic.. nie ma o czym pisać, poza opisem, fakt, intrygującej fabuły.. szkoda czasu? nie wiem.. jest wiele innych filmów zdecydowanie gorszych, przy których nie miałam wrażenia, że go trwonię..
ciekawe dla samej fabuły... tylko... jakiś niedosyt.. czego?.. wzruszenia, chwytania za gardło.. emocji... za fabułę - 9 pkt.. za poruszenie mnie w środku- 1.... kolejny, odhaczony made in usa... :( a może jestem za surowa? nie wiem.. dla mnie film usa to chyba osobny gatunek, a ja spodziewam się fajerwerków.. może..

Probably the life role of Giovanni Ribisi. Quite a successful thriller with a mysterious murderer that no one expected.

An over-average but far from superb fortune teller mystery thriller.
Some weird things are happening in this town, and she got a hunch about some of them.

This is pretty similiar both in theme and quality to Dark Waters or The Others (with TO being superior, though). If you know any of these two, this is what you can roughly expect to see. You will likely get some spooky shivering from time to time.

too easy to discover the killer, it was quite obvious, but still not a bad movie

From director Sam Raimi comes the paranormal thriller The Gift. When a socialite from a rich family goes missing her father turns to a local psychic to help solve the case. Featuring Cate Blanchett, Giovanni Ribisi, Hilary Swank, Katie Holmes, and Keanu Reeves, the film has an all-star cast. But the characters are one-dimensional and poorly developed. Additionally, the script is rather weak and slow paced. Yet Raimi’s directing brings an air of mysterious and suspense to the film that helps to engage the audience. By and large The Gift is a stereotypical thriller, but it’s entertaining and full of intrigue.

There are some great performances, and some meaningful issues brought up, but damned is it slow going for the first third of the film.

It's also always a precarious act when presenting "supernatural" nonsense as real, when you are also trying to take on serious issues instead of just having a bit of fun.

And while this film doesn't really bring the mechanics of the plot's morality into conflict with having to play make believe in order to support our protagonist, and believe her (in the film, very real) clairvoyance, the doldrums of ignorance and magical thinking are, (other than, obviously, poverty, which is much of the cause of the former) a large part of what afflicts the types of people who populate the film, as well as holding back the rest of society. And conflating and confusing that with empathy and human kindness and moral and emotional support is always going to be a side effect of having people doing magic in films where the magic is not a metaphor for something else.

In the end, though, the pacing is what makes this hard to get through.
