One of weirdest movies I've watched lately. Excellent acting, Very good story, and less you know about the plot beforehand the better. Only reason I gave it a 8 is because it is rather slow paced, but still I very much enjoyed watching it.
Men & Chicken is a prime example of how you do a black comedy. The less you know about it going in the better.
'Men & Chicken' is... out there. Good film, though!
The only criticism I have is the run time, I reckon they could've shaved a decent chunk off so the somewhat predictable conclusion comes around quicker. That aside, I enjoyed this 2015 release. It has a strong cast, good humour (mainly across the first half or so) and has a plot that is certainly intriguing - and even manages a positive message in the end, just about.
Mads Mikkelsen is good value here, as he is in pretty much all of his films let's be honest. I watched this as part of my watch through his filmography, so it was cool to see a number of familiar faces that he worked with previously; as well as director Anders Thomas Jensen, of course. Nikolaj Lie Kaas the most obvious, to me anyway, example of that, though you also have the likes of David Dencik and Nicolas Bro.
"Franz beat Carl with the stuffed fox."
"It's irresponsible to have a fox like that lying about. Why do you have it? Who's to say they weren't just playing?"
"Carl got seven stitches under his eye for refusing to taste a cheese."
"From where I'm sitting, it sounds like they're equally to blame."
"Carl is four years old."
Having watched all four films by Anders Thomas Jensen, I'll go against the grain and say that this one is the weakest. There were way too many parts where pretty much nothing interesting happened - comedy or drama-wise. First half was especially bad, it was VERY boring. If you want a really great Danish black comedy/drama, watch Adam's Apples.
Better than a "fun watch," "funtainment" film but not stellar like an all-time classic or extremely poignant or anything. Coming off of the film 'Another Round" with Mads Mikkelsen I decided to give this one a go to check another one of his films off. His range in acting is very good, and the film's premise is both funny and disturbing. It wasn't difficult to figure out well before the end of the movie what the "discovery" would be but still enjoyable. The quirky weirdness of the siblings was both entertaining and annoying which demonstrates the good quality of the acting. I'd like to know how much Danish cultural sentiment/norms are in the film and are familiar to Danish viewers?
