I nearly spit out my teeth when I saw how low Frankenstein (94) score was. This film is quite simply spectacular! It goes in the same category as From Hell, they are both too sophisticated and beautiful to be JUST horror films. The cleverness of this film and its sheer radiance must throw some people off. Kenneth Branagh has always added a bit of class to his films, and his version of Frankenstein is no different. A visually brilliant triumph as a director.

Kenneth Branagh's 1994 adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is an unfairly derided film that, while not as scary or consistently compelling as its source material demands, offers a surprisingly rich and thought-provoking experience. It boasts a lot of interesting thematic and visual ideas, delving into the philosophical and emotional turmoil of creation and abandonment. Furthermore, the movie features a series of truly fantastic performances, most notably from Branagh himself as Victor Frankenstein and Robert De Niro as the Creature, both delivering intense and nuanced portrayals that elevate the material.

This is a very good version of the classic Frankenstein and his monster story with an amazing cast. The movie could have been even batter if it would not suffer form the problem many Kenneth Branagh movies have. The are (or want to be) too serious and the man tends to overact at times. It is a novel. Allow the viewer some fun with it. Still an excellent movie that I highly recommend.

Love the story, however the execution felt rushed and lacking of emotion.

_Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein_ attempts to deliver a faithful cinematic adaptation of the literary classic. With a strong focus on characters, the film follows an ambitious scientist whose obsession with unlocking the secret to creating life leads to his ruin and the destruction of his family. Starring Robert De Niro, Kenneth Branagh, and Helena Bonham Carter, the film features a solid cast, but the performances are rather underwhelming. And there’s no real horror or sense of foreboding to the experimentations or the Frankenstein Monster. While _Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein_ sticks fairly close to the source material, something is missing in the tone and portrayal or the characters.

Rather a crap movie (entirely too overwrought), even if it boasts a remarkable cast.

Since I had never seen an adaptation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" before, I couldn't really make a comparison. However, I can unequivocally state that "Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein" is an unmitigated disaster. The direction and acting are both atrocious. Everything is theatrical and melodramatic, with some dizzying camera work. Furthermore, the cast either shouts or whispers every line of dialogue. Even big-name actors like Robert De Niro or Helena Bonham Carter can't save this mess. The film as a whole is really exhausting. Only a few solid makeup effects and costumes prevent an even worse rating from me.

It would make a great double feature with The Elephant Man.
