Brimstone

In the menacing inferno of the old North-American West, Liz is a genuine survivor who is hunted by a vengeful preacher for a crime she didn’t commit.

This was vividly beautiful and at times brutal, while remaining true to its 'canonical' heritage. Performances were excellent esp. Guy Pierce and Dakota Fanning.
It begins like a historical drama about a family of new settlers struggling with their life in the colonial American West, then as it continues to unfold we realise the story is not all it seems, it is a visionary retelling of Genesis 3, original sin, and the purgatory nature of the life that followed. This was one of the best psychological thrillers in years, a fresh original screenplay and it's a raw perspective of the supposedly 'compassionate' Abrahamic God.
Superb acting and story telling! Some scenes were historically accurate in its brutality. Therefore, the horror rating! Dakota Fannings acting and the actress who plays her younger version along with the mother was so true to its time that you are deeply immersed in their journey. The style of story telling was an unexpected delight as well as expertly taking you along for the ride! Superb! Will see again and again!
I've seen this film several times, damn good film, but sometimes I get thoughts about this film....
Why didn't she kill him while he was sleeping, love to shoot his head off his body. But I hate thinking "because the film is going to end quickly" lol
Great Movie, you will end up hating Guy Pearce' character
Well, this is the world we live in. There is no god that's coming to help you, there is no justice for all, it's just us.
This movie was an unexpected gem. Dakota Fanning's performance was the best I have seen from her. I had not any idea of the plot or such when I saw it and it really blew me away the way it was not so much written as constructed. I'd avoid spoilers to get the most out of this one.
Maybe it's due to the films structure, but i enjoyed this film a lot more the 2nd time watching it. So if you thought it was "meh" you might like giving it a second try.
Really enjoyed watching this movie. Overall, I do like thrillers above other genres. It wasn't thrilling that much, although I was never bored watching this movie, while it takes 2,5 hours to watch. While the story wasn't really clear in the beginning, you got to know more later on. Guess that is the reason the movie is in the genre 'Mystery'. Also, the English speaking Dutch had a really great 'Dutchy' accent :'). Good cinematograhpy, really good actors. 8 out of 10.
Savage and grim, and all the better for it. I read a review on the film which said "a film to be endured and not entertained by." Does every film need to be entertaining? Should there have been a musical number to bring levity to this harsh tale? No, of course not, and while this film doesn't entertain par se, it does provide a gripping story, in a land where good people are hard to come by.
Dark, Gritty, Slow-burning and absolutely epic story telling. Dakota Fanning, Emilia Jones and Guy Pearce deliver outstanding performances.
Watching this movie will require 2.5 hours or longer of your time. One of the reasons it took me so long to get around to watching it.
