Contagion

This movie was a 6 in 2011 but a 10/10 now.

I had already seen this 10 years ago but seeing it again was even better. I bump my rating from 8 to 10. seeing Dr. Sanjay Gupta blew my mind. And it has also its own Hydroxychloroquine. It's a criminal act to publicize a drug that doesn't work. This has truly become a classic now.

How relevant has this movie has become now eh?? After watching it again now (first time on release date), man this is almost exactly what's going on out there!

It is shocking to me how realistic this 2011 movie is. Now living in the ongoing 2019/2020/2021 pandemic makes this movie so much harder to review just on a cinematic level. The events depicted in this movie are so close to reality in some of the storylines it doesn't even seem real that this is now almost 10 years old.
I haven't seen this movie before 2021 but I know if I had seen this movie before living it I would have rated it much worse. Especially Jude Law's character would have seemed to me silly and over-the-top but in 2021 it seemed to me the most real of all of the characters.
How did this happen?
This movie makes me want to go back to 2011 where this seemed silly. But I can't. Watching this in 2021 makes me anxious which other dystopian fantasies might become real in the future.

I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish but I also understand why Contagion is so underrated and considered boring by many viewers ... you can't appreciate how awesome (or should I say terrifying?) it is without a solid scientific background. I'm both a science nerd and a med student hence my extremely positive review and my intense experience; I know full well this is as close as it gets to a documentary if anything like this happened for real (again) which is actually possible. Even more so with all the anti-vax bullshit going on now! Anyways I loved the attention to details meshed with the realistic approach to the matter on all sides from the scientific one to the political, the sociocultural, and of course the eventual economical exploitation of the event.

Contagion is a gripping and eerily prescient film that I would rate 9 out of 10. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast—including Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, and Laurence Fishburne—the movie delivers a realistic portrayal of a global pandemic.

The film's depiction of a rapidly spreading virus, originating from a bat-pig-human transmission chain, mirrors real-world concerns about zoonotic diseases. Its emphasis on the interconnectedness of our global society and the challenges faced by health organizations like the CDC and WHO in containing such outbreaks is both informative and unsettling. And it shows again why we should go vegan.

One of the most striking aspects is the film's foresight. Released in 2011, it anticipated many issues that became realities during the COVID-19 pandemic, including misinformation spread by conspiracy theorists, public panic, and the race to develop a vaccine. The scenes set in China, particularly the origin of the virus in Macau, highlight the global nature of such health crises.

A particularly haunting scene is when Mitch Emhoff (Matt Damon) learns of his wife's sudden death. In a state of disbelief, he asks, "Can I go talk to her?"—a line that encapsulates the shock and denial experienced in the face of unexpected loss. Damon's portrayal of grief is both subtle and powerful, grounding the film's global narrative in personal tragedy.

The ending, revealing the virus's jump from animals to humans due to deforestation and human encroachment, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of disrupting natural ecosystems.

Overall, Contagion is a meticulously crafted thriller that combines scientific accuracy with compelling storytelling. Its relevance has only grown over time, making it a must-watch for those interested in understanding the complexities of global pandemics.

Oh God we have been through a lot and it is not done yet...

This movie shows in a very good way how the next virus outbreak that will be just as big or maybe even bigger as the Spanish Flu is gonna happen in the 21th century. And believe me, sooner or later IT WILL HAPPEN.

I liked the electronic music that was playing at the beginning of the movie. It had sort of an panicked tone to it that together with the people who where getting sick and dying set a thrilling tone to the first part of the movie.

I found the movie to be very realistic. Jude Law character was spot-on. When there is gonna be an outbreak we will see people on the internet (who have no medical training whatsoever) who think they have found the cure and millions of people will listen to them. There will be millions of people who stop going to work, who stay at home and avoid contact with anyone. Others will do whatever they can to get their hands on a vaccination, even if that means killing someone else.

I liked the fact that we got to see the story from so many different angles. It really gave an overview of the entire situation and what the virus had for an impact on all the people involved.

The end of the movie was a bit disappointing. In my opinion that could have been a lot better. But overall i find this movie to be really good.
