The Straight Story

One of the best films ever made...i adore it

I think it's the pitch-perfect rural Midwest stuff in there, the radiating of heart and love at the core of this film, all of that solidifies this as Lynch's best.

Beautifully made film.

It's a difficult one to describe. 'The Straight Story' features a very touching, true life, story about Alvin Straight. It's a very simple premise but one that the film brings to life wonderfully. There's a crap tonne of heart, alongside some brilliant cinematography and a top notch score.

Richard Farnsworth plays the role of Alvin expertly, it's an outstanding performance from him. Credit also to Sissy Spacek, who makes an impact as Rose despite not really being in the film for all that long. Harry Dean Stanton (Lyle) makes an appearance, too.

It's a slow burn but one that's totally worth the 112 minute run time. The message is truly heart-warming, with words of wisdom aplenty. What a great way to end the millennium for Disney's live-action theatrical releases.

David Lynch's first mainstream film since "The Elephant Man" is a down-to-earth yet extremely heartwarming story. The austerity of the script and cinematography is strictly functional to the realistic portrait of Alvin Straight. Both the anguish and wisdom that come with aging are conveyed without getting idealized or overly sentimental. However, the film still retains a poetic nature as Alvin crosses the country seeking redemption like some kind of retired western hero on his old horse. Richard Farnsworth's natural performance and deep watery eyes really brought the character to life.
The only letdown was maybe the ending. I liked how it was kept as un-cinematic as the rest of the film, but a couple of more words between Alvin and Lyle wouldn't hurt.

Do we really want David Lynch to direct Walt Disney movies?

Not to bad, it's based on true story, it's just a bit too boring and the acting is kinda bad. The ending could also be better? I mean poor old man traveled for so long for that ending?

I waited for an emotional end, but there is nothing special instead. The film is full of boring moments with senseless shots; I just can't get attached to Alvin, there's not a tranformation during the travel. A better OST is needed, specially if you film a lonely man. I give a 5 because the film pretends to relate a real history, and some Alvin's advices are interesting.

I read this is David Lynch's most accesible movie. I didn't think he would play it so straight (no pun intended, I swear).

People complain about the ending but did you really expect these two old men to have a deep conversation after not having seen each other in 10 years?
