The Pianist

The true story of pianist Władysław Szpilman's experiences in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation. When the Jews of the city find themselves forced into a ghetto, Szpilman finds work playing in a café; and when his family is deported in 1942, he stays behind, works for a while as a laborer, and eventually goes into hiding in the ruins of the war-torn city.

The film is a masterpiece and stands among the best in the World War II genre. It is a fantastic tribute to Szpilman, albeit belated and posthumous. I first watched it when it was released and appreciated it less than I do now. I believe the film grows with maturity and understanding. It encapsulates powerful experiences in a hateful world, and many tears were shed throughout the viewing. If you haven’t seen the film, it is a must-watch. Put it on your bucket list.

The only thing I wish for is more about the officer, Hosfield, in the film, but as mentioned, the film is a tribute to Szpilman.

I highly recommend it. 10/10.

The most harrowing film I’ve ever seen. A must-see for anyone, purely for the history.

The Pianist is powerful and haunting. Adrien Brody delivers an incredible performance, and the film’s portrayal of survival and resilience during the Holocaust is intense. It’s beautifully shot and emotionally gripping, though it’s not an easy watch. 9/10.

During the "final solution to the Jewish question" in the Warsaw ghetto, the then famous pianist tries to survive. Polanski shows through his eyes what he remembered as a child. Brody simply lives in that hell, having brought himself to fainting from hunger with preparation. The music combines all this into a masterpiece.
