The House of Seven Corpses

A director is filming on location in a house where seven murders were committed. The caretaker warns them not to mess with things they do not understand (the murders were occult related), but the director wants to be as authentic as possible and has his cast re-enact rituals that took place in the house thus summoning a ghoul from the nearby cemetery to bump the whole film crew off one by one.

_The House of Seven Corpses_ is sadly not a prequel to _House of 1000 Corpses_ (2003).
No, this is a rather confused horror movie that tries to have its cake and eat it too. What's important to note here is this is a movie about making a movie, which resulted in some tricky moments of "is this supposed to be real or part of the movie?" I think the story would have worked better without the extra layer and just be a period-piece.
Overall, the film is very slow and lacks any impact. The kills are few and mostly offscreen. The tagline on the poster gives this away, so I don't consider it a spoiler: The threat in the movie is a zombie - a meaning one - and he doesn't show up until the third act. Before that, all we get are fake outs. Okay, a kitty gets ripped in half, but this happens offscreen. RIP little meower.
What the film gets right is what you would expect from '70s horror: great lighting, vibrant colors, spooky setting, eerie score. The '70s really was the best era for creepy horror films.
If this were made properly, we'd really play with the idea of "what's real, and what's part of the movie?" We'd also have people mysteriously die, until a crescendo in the third act, instead of everything at the very end, in a lackluster manner.
Not recommended, even if you love spooky stories without depth.
All I'm going to remember about this was the blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment of boob and bush from Carole Wells. It was quick, but I saw it.
"You're a groovy corpse."
