Piranha 3D

Each year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria, Arizona explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 residents for the annual Spring Break celebration. But then, an earthquake opens an underwater chasm, releasing an enormous swarm of ancient Piranha that have been dormant for thousands of years, now with a taste for human flesh. This year, there's something more to worry about than the usual hangovers and complaints from locals, a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria.

The movie is what it is, described below. An 80's throwback that suceeds. It was worhty of the watercooler discussion in the office the following day.

I liked a lot. A bit bloody (too bloody) but very good.

Awesome!!! Hilarious!!! Bloody!!!

Alexandre Aja has, with Piranha, managed to make something that skirts the line between parody and horror, without really straying too much into either camp. A perfect blend of comedy and horror…

…and boobies.

It's just a whole hell of a lot of fun!!!!

I'm with you Sean, I really think they hit the mark they were aiming for. I missed it at the cinema and regret it because the 3D money shots looked like they would have been cool. I watched it with a couple of friends and had a laugh over a few beers. I watched it again with my teenage kids and it still hit all the same marks for them, so it wasn't the beer :)

Jerry O'Connell played it perfectly; a total a-hole who meets the most perfect demise for him I don't think that is a spoiler as the moment he opens his mouth for the first time you are just counting down the minutes until he bites it.

Ving Rhame's has a classic moment that shows he's all that is man.

A nice genre nod at the beginning too.

The obligitory gratuitous nudity scene was inspired, as its balletic nature nearly stops the film dead and serves it to you on a platter. If you are going to tick the box, tick it well.

The characters are all one dimensional and I never expected more, it's all about the deaths. Some of them reached laughter at WTF?! levels and required a rewind to appreciate the set up and for those so inclided the work of the FX/Makeup crew.

So, is it great? Wow, not by a long shot.

Is it fun? With a group of friends sure, on your own maybe not quite as much. You just have to put your brain in neutral.

This is cheesy, campy, B-Movie perfection. Gore and girls galore.

I watched this again, with my father, in preparation to see The Meg, 'cause I was worried hearing reports the upcoming film was neutered of it's blood soaked glory. I wanted to compensate any blue balls I thought I would have by first drowning myself in wild girls tits and ripped apart penises before inevitable disappointment. I think Piranha loses some of it's enjoyment on repeat viewings, but there's enough over the top fun and classic b-movie antics to keep all horror fans satisfied. It's crazy to see such a crass and low brow endeavor like this film get critical acclaim from critics. The effects aren't the greatest, the story is childish, but the greatest attribute it boasts I proudly agree with is it doesn't hold back. This is a clear cut modern example of not taking yourself seriously, just having fun with your premise. You want to see an entire lake of spring breakers get ripped to fucking shreds with blood and gore everywhere? You will most definitely get it and more. You want to see Christopher Lloyd briefly reprise his role as Doc Brown raving about the piranhas? You got it. Want to see Eli Roth get his head cut off? You bet your ass you'll get it. Want Adam Scott to shoot piranhas with a shotgun while riding a jet ski? It's here, baby. How about tearing the shit out of them with a boat propeller detached like a chainsaw? I'll stop spoiling the fun. It's a crazy match made in heaven, few "don't take yourself seriously" films like Sharknado hit that very specific sweet spot that makes the film fun as hell to watch, but not in a laughing at it bad way. Piranha 3D is the very rare gore fest that knows how to have loads of genuine summer fun; a return to 80's exploitation.

'Piranha 3D' does attempt something a bit different to the film it remakes (unlike the 1995 redo) and parts are decent (e.g. the gore), though all things considered it's not a movie I'd wanna revisit. It isn't as concise or as fun as Joe Dante's flick, the effects aren't the most convincing either.

The 3D portions are funny to see all these years later (in 2D, obvs). I was never a fan of that format, so I'm glad it never stuck around - pure gimmick. Going back to the effects, the piranha's usage and design underwhelm. I also said this in my review of the 1978 flick's sequel, but: less is more.

The cast are alright. Elisabeth Shue is the clear standout, her character is actually quite cool in terms of what she does and how she handles herself; not a female character that is only there for their looks, like most are here to be frank. Elsewhere, Steven R. McQueen is solid too.

Interesting to see the involvement of Kelly Brook, someone I know from her work away from film; smart casting, to be fair. Away from those, Jessica Szohr is decent, though Jerry O'Connell is rubbish. Adam Scott, Ving Rhames and Christopher Lloyd also appear, Richard Dreyfuss too.

It is better than the other 'follow-ups' to the original and I didn't find it to be absolutely bad, so I guess it merits small praise for that. Still, not one I'd recommend.
