Jean de Florette

In a rural French village, an old man and his only remaining relative cast their covetous eyes on an adjoining vacant property. They need its spring water for growing their flowers, and are dismayed to hear that the man who has inherited it is moving in. They block up the spring and watch as their new neighbour tries to keep his crops watered from wells far afield through the hot summer. Though they see his desperate efforts are breaking his health and his wife and daughter's hearts, they think only of getting the water.

Above all, it’s the exceptional acting from Depardieu, Auteuil, and Montand that elevates this film into masterpiece territory. The mood and atmosphere are beautifully crafted, wrapping the story in a melancholy that’s as poignant as it is powerful. Depardieu, in particular, delivers one of his finest performances : the tenacity, the quiet desperation in his eyes, the sheer physical presence of his character, it’s incredible to watch. A stunning first chapter, full of heartbreak and quiet tragedy.

A remarkable film that manages to tread a fine line between comedy and tragedy throughout as two landowners conspire to thwart the efforts of their unsuspecting neighbour from making a success of his new venture. It’s initial tone suggests a light hearted farce, but Depardieu’s determined and sympathetic performance in the face of adversity are a constant reminder of the cruelty and greed of those around him. Whilst the film is beautifully shot, it is also equally adept at reminding the audience of the harsh environment that the farmers are working in. The final moments of the film clearly suggest a story that is unfinished, but as a stand-alone tale of greed and jealousy, it works extremely well.

very good and well paced story. enjoyable and engaging throughout. almost all of it seems realistic and should how it be.

still there is 2 scenes which felt done so for the sake of it. which were very significant scenes to the plot by the way. if they had just adjusted those a little they would still work just as good and realistic as the rest.
