A reboot of a 1980's Indonesian horror movie (with the sequel connecting to the original already planned) that sports a solid atmosphere and interesting mythology. I just wish they'd managed to interweave the exposition a bit more naturally
(not with some bogus articles popping up)
but maybe Part II will get that right?
Movie was good, but unrelated to that: I don't understand that room with a well. Both the kids were just pissing straight on the floor in there. Is that normal? People just have a "piss on the floor" room? Not just that, I mean that would be "fine" (not really, but you know, respect peoples differences etc.), but they also just walk around on that floor seemingly every day. They walk around bare feet in the piss-room.

I'm seeing the sequel next week so I figured it's time to revisit this satanic cult/supernatural horror. This one although not my favorite, still is a decent spook fest. Nothing I'd call particularly groundbreaking or original. Despite feeling pretty much like a very polished commercial supernatural horror, the cultural differences make it unique and it still offers a few surprises under its sleeve that manages to rise it above what similar films from the genre are trying to do. Most of the scares feel earned, the compelling family dynamic makes it always engaging, and the score truly brings out the dread. Super stoked for the sequel.
This was supposed to be scary?
It has the alluring power of thai horror movies but without taking full advantage of it. With a repetitive structure of ghost appearances in similar jump scare sequences, it soon exhausts his possibilities, and is not even able to effectively introduce the mythology of demons embedded in nature. There is a tendency to remake the popular films of the eighties, but without introducing novelties that justify the effort.
