I wanted to see this for one reason alone, and that's Christina Lindberg. She is one of the sexiest women ever, and easily the hottest from '70s cinema.
When the movie starts, it seems we are going down a fish-out-of-water path. Lindberg plays Inga - a young girl from a small town, who goes to visit her big sister (Greta) in the city. Predictable sexploitation. We get to see Lindberg's perfect body. What more could you ask for?
With the movie being titled _Maid in Sweden_, I thought Lindberg would play an actual maid. Then I though "maybe they misspelled 'made.'" Ultimately, I think we're just working off an outdated usage of the word, more akin to "maiden." Now, I bring this up only because being a product of its time will be a theme - strap in. I was all set to be mildly bored, yet aroused, then the second act hit...
So, Inga is visiting her sister, who lives with her boyfriend, Carsten (absolute douche). On Inga's second night there, Greta, and Carsten plan a dinner, and invite Bjorn as Inga's date. Bjorn, and Inga go out to eat, then they go to Bjorn's place, and he rapes her. Yeah. It just happens out of nowhere, and it's directed in a manner that shows Inga as unequivocally resistant, which then turns to submission, followed by her clearly distressed about what happened. The movie even goes as far as to have Inga apologize to Bjorn for the way she acted.
A really dark turn in a movie that I thought was going to be a fun time, full of nudity. Really bummed me out.
At this time, I know I've completely misjudged the story, but it continued to go off the rails.
What happens? Inga, and Bjorn go on another date, and it's portrayed as fun, and romantic. No, movie, you don't get to do that. There is nothing cute about this - throw as much pop/rock, '60s Scooby-Doo music on the soundtrack as you want, there's no coming back from date rape.
Anyway, after this, it's Inga's final night with her sister, and Carsten, who has been a dick to Inga the entire time, goes into the bathroom while Inga is bathing... and rapes her. Are you kidding me?! Greta comes home to see this happening, and understandably is angry with Carston. Inga goes home. The end.
Now, I'm going to sound like a second-wave feminist here, but this is all disgusting. It's not a matter of there being rape in a movie - hell, Lindberg was in _Thriller: A Cruel Picture_ (1973), and that movie is full of rape, but it's shown to be bad, and it's about getting revenge.
That's the problem: this is shown to be fun and sexy. Okay, it's not about the content, it's the tone. A movie can be start-to-finish depravity, but don't try to make it seem as though there isn't a problem with what's happening.
Okay, so another thought I had, by the end of this, was realism. That is to say, women can definitely get involved with scumbags who treat them like shit. Women could be date raped and trick themselves into thinking it was romantic or maybe just be so traumatized that they block is out entirely. That's within the realm of reality. Trouble is, I don't, for a second, think that the person who made this was going for that. I think they either had a very low opinion of women or men or both. The guys within are dicks, and the women ask their forgiveness for being justifiably distressed.
I can't recommend this to anyone. Again, just bummed me out. Here's an idea: have the same movie, only make it so Inga gets to have consensual sex with guys who aren't total dicks. Even if you want to have her begin as shy and innocent at first, only to discover her sexuality. Otherwise, make this a dark, serious movie that tackles rape, and women attracting abusive men. Pick one!
