The Wolf's Call

Shown from the perspective of a young submariner with unusually sensitive hearing and uncannily precise sound recognition. The fate of many often depends on his ability, and one time, whilst highly stressed, he makes a incorrect call which put his entire crew in mortal danger. Trying to regain the confidence of his comrades, he conducts an unauthorised investigation of an apparent plot which, it turns out, risks escalating into a nuclear apocalypse. Suddenly working under pressure with the fleet admiral, they must do whatever is necessary, even the unthinkable, to prevent a nuclear war, since a confirmed nuclear strike order cannot be countermanded.

The Wolf’s Call is one of those films that doesn't need big speeches to grab you. From the very beginning, the tension is palpable. That feeling of confinement, looming danger, and high-stakes decision-making is constant—and it strongly reminded me of Das Boot, which is saying a lot. While it doesn’t quite reach that legendary level, it does keep you on edge for most of its runtime.

The story centers around a young acoustic expert whose ability to identify underwater sounds becomes crucial when things spiral into near-apocalyptic territory. What I liked most is how it handles suspense with restraint, avoiding unnecessary explosions or forced twists. Everything unfolds slowly and deliberately, which gives the film its strength.

Visually, it’s top-notch. The production design is meticulous, the sound work is excellent, and the setting truly makes you feel like you’re inside that submarine. In terms of pacing, the first half works better, filled with quiet intensity, while the second leans more into familiar storytelling choices. Still, it doesn’t ruin the experience.

Yes, it leans on a few military movie clichés and follows a structure we’ve seen before, but it makes up for it with a great atmosphere, strong performances, and a kind of raw nerve that’s hard to achieve—especially in a directorial debut.

It doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it knows what it’s doing—and does it well. That alone makes it worth watching, especially if you enjoy war films that focus more on psychological pressure than pure action.

good movie, it didn't go where I expected to and I liked that. Thou it takes quite a while for the main history plot to take off.

In general, a good, action packed movie. An interesting plot with good acting and great production value. However, some informations and characters relations are given, instead of being developed. The ending may not please everyone.

Absolutely worth watching, though not without flaws.
It begins so good ... and then it almost fell apart when human interactions began to unfold. Often enough the dialogues are simply embarrassing.
The often mentioned end was actually pretty good in my book. It certainly made more sense than the development of the greater plot, the escalating conflict.

Good acting and interesting plot but I find the ending to be a bit unbelievable and I really, really don't understand why they broke the rhythm of the movie to push some useless romance with a female character that has no personality and is obviously only here to fit the old and overused "the hero get the girl" cliché.

High hopes for this one but for some reason I closed it after 50% or so during watching, dunno ... cannot really recommend this one unless maybe if you are a big big fan of submarines let's say.

I liked this French movie of submarines, which seem tougher than full throttle cars and I expected more from the sound to be so important in the movie

_Le Chant du Loup_: When you try to stretch a quickie into tantric sex by using too much foreplay.

_The Wolf's Call_ is innocuous enough but would've been far more pleasant if they'd cut 20 minutes of exposition and made it a 90-minute action flick.

The film could be a solid 9 until 5 minutes to the end.
But the end is absolutely abysmal. Impossible situations and making military disobeying orders looking great.
