Dredd

In the future, America is a dystopian wasteland. The latest scourge is Ma-Ma, a prostitute-turned-drug pusher with a dangerous new drug and aims to take over the city. The only possibility of stopping her is an elite group of urban police called Judges, who combine the duties of judge, jury and executioner to deliver a brutal brand of swift justice. But even the top-ranking Judge, Dredd, discovers that taking down Ma-Ma isn’t as easy as it seems in this explosive adaptation of the hugely popular comic series.

I rank this 8/10. One of the best movies of 2012. Awesome Soundtrack (Kind of a Trance Style). Great choice of visuals, seems closer to today which made it more identifiable with most people. Slo-Mo was used too much though

Wow, this film was GREAT! I'm sad it took me so long to get round to watching it.

Disheartening to hear that it didn't make much money and that a squeal likely wont happen.

Watched this with two friends in 3D/VR, with a third watching in 2D. One had not seen it before.

A perfect 5 out of 5-star movie that's genuinely pushed to a 6th star when watched in 3D. Every line and every shot works in service of a setup, a payoff, a thread, a callback, or a resolution of one of those things. The second shot of the exterior of Peach Trees shows us the open center floor plan of the building
A minor bit of foreshadowing, passed as an establishing shot
, and the fourth shot of Peach Trees, and the first time Dredd and Anderson see the building, we're shown the
halfpipe that will become a moment of refuge and communication moments after Ma-Ma lays waste with the miniguns, right before heading back into the belly of the beast
.

Then the fourth shot of Peach Trees, and the first time Dredd and Anderson see the building, we're shown the
halfpipe that will later become a moment of refuge and communication moments after Ma-Ma has laid waste with the miniguns, right before heading back into the belly of the beast
.

There's absolutely no wasted time in this, although some will point to the slow-mo shots as something they feel drag on. To that I say the lengthened moments in the original 3D makes those shots visually mesmerizing in a way that 2D never will, and don't overstay their welcome. Additionally those shots are only used when thematically appropriate - in the intro chase (when Slo-Mo is introduced), when dropping the victims who've been dosed (
Foreshadowing is a literary device...
), when attacking a room of hostile drug users (as a visual disparity of how the drug feels vs the cold hued reality that Anderson experiences ambushing the room), and we don't see it again until
Ma-Ma is dosed and thrown off her 200th floor throne (recalling the same death her victims got, save being filleted
. And that's the kind of thing that I mean by saying there's no wasted runtime.

Hot take - I think Dredd 3D is a better action film than John Wick (which I adore) and has a better script. John Wick only slightly does better in the worldbuilding department. Saying so is not a condemnation of Wick or Keanu or Chad Stahelski or Derek Kolstad, and in looking it up it appears Dredd had anywhere from $0-10Mil more in budget, so it seems Chad and Co did more with their money in the long run, however I genuinely believe this is because in 2012 even the mention of another 3D movie made me (and likely many others) sick. I wronged you so badly Alex, Karl, and Olivia, which I try to make right every chance I get, hahaha.

Additionally I don't even have words for how much of a brutal vibe the whole score is. Every moment it's present it amps the situation, and when it's silent it's 100% to illustrate how eerie of a thing that is in this day's events for Dredd and Anderson. The silence is haunting when it occurs.

The stereoscopic nature of the entire production really just gives depth to so many moments in the film that even look great in 2D, but are so much more visually striking in 3D/VR. and in one of final moments as we see
Ma-Ma falling directly at us, and instead in portrait
, there is such a sense of speed and gravity that it made my stomach physically lurch in a way that only real acrophobia can.

I could find more to gush about, but... OH WAIT - DOMHNAL GLEESON AS THE CLAN TECHIE RUNS ACTUAL PORT SCANS WHEN ATTACKING A TARGET! Why fake a UI when Linux and open source can deliver the essence of a hack on a silver platter?

I really want to see a copy of this script highlighted and color coded to show what every line's purpose in driving a particular beat forward, relating to an existing thread, calling back to a previous line, or characterization, with slightly smaller parenthesis around each subsequent doll that gets nested within. This movie would be a masterclass in character and theme analysis in doing so.

Ok, seriously, I'm about done, but I'd love to see a sequel to this, particularly in an era where more people have access to actual dual-display stereoscopic video than ever before. No glasses required (unless they're prescription). This movie is a template for how both action and 3D should and can be done. 3D Movies Are Dead. Long Live 3D Movies!

All Gold
Dredd uncut
is one Hella of a movie
and literally takes no
Prisoners.
Carl and Olivia put in
an absolute Stella
performance.
This movie definitely
takes inspiration from
The Raid and that is not
a bad thing at all in fact
it's that choice that makes
this movie so
Frickin Awesome.
I love the no nonsense feel
and the dirty gritty attitude
it has from start to finish.
Ironically it's criminal that
we never got any sequels
from this hard hitting
Tons of fun movie.

Verdict: full of attitude
and charisma with an
unapologetic approach.
A BALLS TO WALLS
MOVIE
And a Hella of a
Good Time
What's not to Love.

I was blown away with the awesomeness of this movie when it came out. At the time, Judge Dredd was a joke. I AM THE LAAAAHHHWW! Classic terrible movie that stuck with the character too. That is, until the new movie came along. This is what I want in a R rated action film. It knows what it is, and it doesn't try to be some sort of deep, emotional drama with action. No, it is a simple plot, with a simple conflict that is super exciting to watch.

I had actually forgetten a lot of the details since I first saw this one. It was nice to live through it again. The whole sequence with the homeless guy is one that I enjoyed going through blind twice. And the outcome of those giant chain guns coming out... wonderful. But the very best part of the whole movie is the fact that Karl Urban nails that role. Somehow he keeps that frustrated and annoyed frowny face going for every shot, yet still manages to show us what he's thinking internally. Urban has a sad frowny face, a happy frowny face, a bored frowny face, and even a respectful frowny face. That is acting folks.
