I can't believe Max wrote and directed this movie. Yea I know he is a famous director. What a gripping performance too. The world-building was amazing and it was quite... cozy? The chemistry was out of this world. Damn

My God but Xavier Dolan is a gifted director. He wields such a subtle and sensitive camera that it'll sometimes steal your breath. Imagine what he could've done had _Matthias & Maxime_ had more of a story!

I have long been a fan of Dolan's work and this one didn't disappoint. Relationships are complicated, especially when you're hiding your true feelings, and the film expressed this reality well. As both actor and director, Dolan commits himself well. Its not his best film, but it is much better than a lot of the junk that is churned out by mainstream Hollywood.

watching "matthias & maxime," it became clear to me that xavier dolan repeated some of the key traits from his previous films, something he himself acknowledges in the q&a on mubi, where i had the chance to watch it. elements of "i killed my mother" are present here, along with character traits that dolan has portrayed in other projects, as he mentioned.

however, the film failed to captivate me. the relationship between the two protagonists, which should have been the heart of the story, felt underdeveloped. there's a lack of focus on both the plot and the storyline itself, making the nearly two-hour runtime feel slow and, at times, frustrating. while the story starts to pick up towards the final act, the gaps in the development of matthias and maxime's relationship make it hard to form a genuine connection with the characters.

as a fan of some of dolan's works, like "mommy" (one of my favorites), it's disappointing to see "matthias & maxime" as, in my opinion, one of the weakest movies in his filmography. even so, the beauty of the cinematography is undeniable, which is something we always expect from dolan. but even the visual aesthetic wasn't enough to make up for the inconsistent writing.

i'm not a fan of open endings or narratives that leave a void for the audience to fill, but i respect directors who take that risk. unfortunately, in this case, the open ending didn’t feel like a bold choice but rather a lazy way out of a story that had already left much to be desired.

it's unfortunate. xavier dolan is a talented director, but "matthias & maxime" fell short of his potential. unfortunately.
