“The thing with unhappiness is, after a while, it stops being interesting.”

Slow, and poetic. A calmness, only on the outside.

Jamie’s reaction to when his mother tells him about possibly wanting to get out was so wonderful. One of the best reactions I’ve ever seen on film. So raw.

This is a movie about a couple whose marriage is off the tracks to a degree that neither partner seems to agree on. We've seen this movie before (of course) but what's sets this apart is that you get a real feeling for the emotional state of each partner through interactions with their son. I think what I found most interesting is that while the issues in their marriage seemed to be very one-sided about halfway through the film I came to realize that Benning's character seemed to be more abstract than literal. Despite her flaws I felt compassion for the one left behind. Both she and Nighy were as stellar as you would expect them to be.

Bening and Nighy are fantastic here (no surprises there) and the film is a good one. O'Connor is good too, and he is the emotional center between two people who are growing apart from one another. Hope Gap is a fitting title - as the gap widens between the married couple so too does any hope of them getting back together.
