Shirley

This was such a unique way to tell a story, or rather a story in a story. I can't think of another movie quite like it. I love when something happens in a movie where it forces the user to reconsider everything that had happened earlier in a new light. Beyond that, the acting by the three leads is exceptional. Elisabeth Moss is this generation's Meryl Streep. I recently saw Capote and was distracted by Hoffman's portrayal for the whole movie. Moss is nearly unrecognizable in this role and it is completely believable.

Just reading through some of the comments here.... I think some people misunderstood the ending and thus the entire movie.

miss scientology being feral and unhinged as usual

the acting alone makes this worth watching. soundtrack is lovely too. it's a disjointed story with no real beginning and end, but i don't feel like it was time wasted either. COULD HAVE USED MORE OF LOGAN LERMANS BEAUTIFUL FACE THOUGH. and victoria pedretti.

Performances to love but characters that are hard to like. It's an imagined chapter in Jackson's life, and while sometimes engrossing, it can also be frustrating and cold.

This film has a lot of issues. It's disconnected, disjointed and doesn't really do great character development. As for it being a pseudo biopic for a horror writer Shirley doesn't give any indication of this. It really wouldn't have mattered. Moss was the only reason I watched it and her performance was good. The film was slow and lacked an arc for sure. I wouldn't recommend this film.

Elizabeth Moss sure does have a type of role.

The director strives to constantly underline with a schizophrenic author style the sequences of a script that is itself messy. Fortunately, Elisabeth Moss and Michael Stuhlbarg understand their characters better, even if it is in the middle of a proposal that is defined neither as a biopic nor as a psychological drama.

What a snoozefest!! Wasted 90 minutes of my life.
