I almost didn't watch this because the plot seemed pretty basic. Which it is. But even a basic plot can shine with some great fight scenes and some story telling sprinkled in the mix.
The plot kept me interested throughout the whole movie, with a good twist, the fighting was decent and I was very charmed by Miku Martineau her performance. And it’s small things that make me love it: the way Japanese characters speak Japanese to each other (I hate when movies make non native English speaking characters talk English to each other) how you hear only Japanese music in this movie set in Japan or how people actually run out of ammo frequently while shooting their guns. I think it’s a very well done movie over all.
It also gave me a little bit of a Cyberpunk 2077 vibe but I’m not sure if that’s just cause of the neon lights, the protagonist with a time limit cause they’re dying thanks to a mission gone wrong, the powerful Japanese as the antagonist or because there’s someone named V. Also fun but unrelated: BAND-MAID are in this!! My favorite rock band!!!
legitimately such a visually stunning and fun entry into the action genre. the number of times bullets run out is one of my favorite aspects of the action sequences, but also there's a scene later on that, combined with mary elizabeth winstead's increasingly horrifying deterioration, puts this on my body horror list. it's not a horror, but it's pretty and there's bodies being horrific, so it works. i'm really digging the recent action films that use just enough stylistic choices borrowed from video games to bump up the immersion.
when i was checking on who the stunt coordinators were i saw some Highly Bitter articles calling this a john wick clone but honestly every action movie follows a formula because the formula works and being poisoned with radiation is a great reason for revenge even if it didn't involve a dog.
also, i don't even fucking care i loved that ridiculous car chase scene
Very entertaining non stop action movie. I really enjoyed this movie. Kate was great. Sadly I don't think there will be a sequel unless something miraculous happens! Very entertaining 👏 😉:thumbsup_tone1:😁
What a beautiful movie, and amazing visuals I loved it but it made me sad near ending omg wha-
Another "Nikita" attempt by Netflix. But here you have Mary Elizabeth who kicked ass! She carried out the cliché film in an excellent way, even the fight scenes and deaths were awesome. This was a good attempt and a very entertaining action movie.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars in the Netflix action film _Kate_. When a professional assassin discovers that she’s been poisoned and only has hours left to live, she uses that time to track down those responsible and makes some disturbing discoveries. Winstead gives an incredible performance, and is backed by Woody Harrelson and newcomer Miku Patricia Martineau (who has great on-screen chemistry with Winstead). And, the fight scenes are especially well-done and have a gritty intensity to them. Also, the soundtrack adds a lot energy to film and heightens the action scenes. A high-adrenaline thriller, _Kate_ is tremendously entertaining.
(594-word review) I wasn't expecting much from this film. It's not that I thought it'd be less than decent. It's that I never would've expected this. I usually go into the fray of films with a semi-conscious/borderline subconscious mindset of believing there will be enough entertainment, at the very least. That's usually the case, not something more or even something less: whether in the direction of good or bad, being detached on some level/not expecting much shows that while I enjoyed a film, it's never gone beyond that.
So, imagine my surprise when this one slithers in/when I selected this one and that it had the effect that it did. It was genuinely great, and it even tugged at the heartstrings in subtle ways regarding Kate and Ani, concluding with a more powerful tug with the final confrontation, particularly at the end of it/the film. Which was peculiar and surprising, also new for me because I don't think any I've watched ever has done that.
That alone, and for accomplishing that, is enough to present to it the honor of being given this rating. It's an unforgettable feeling. When films hit you like this, the ones that didn't do so pale in comparison, even if they were decent enough with the first viewing and even after experiencing that feeling with ones that "go further."
While the fight choreography, the action sequence direction, and Lyle Vincent's cinematography were all good (the fight choreography/action sequences, in particular, were well-done: and the cinematography had a pretty aesthetic, vibrant and photogenic at times, which I loved), it was the performances by the two leads that's the best aspect, especially their chemistry.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who's incredibly attractive – sorry, my mistake: HOT; it's likely been said and should continue) was fantastic, but Miku Martineau was the surprising cast member who held her own, delivering a compelling performance. The chemistry between these two actresses was the most effective element, and it made the film for me; it landed tremendously well.
Performance-wise, as far as the others are concerned, Tadanobu Asano and Jun Kunimura were the standouts, while Woody Harrelson was alright. I thought Jun was the best. The whole honor thing in Japanese culture and the older, well-mannered, wise ambiance on his character, which he conveyed well, not to mention the scenes with Kijima and Kate, were contributing factors.
Both the score and the soundtrack were also good. Nathan Barr (the composer) did a good job composing the score. Liza Richardson (the music supervisor), however, was the star. The songs she picked were great, especially "Kinjitou" by Reol at the end credits.
And the projection mapping of _Tokyo Ghoul_ on the building was unexpected but a pleasant surprise, as was the car chase sequence, which, while fanciful, was an unusual route to go; so, I'll give credit where credit is due for that.
Many people had a problem with the plot and its predictability, which, oddly enough (given how that can sometimes be something I also had/have an issue with), wasn't an issue with this one. I saw it immediately, but I won't pretend it's not the truth; I acknowledge it. Even so, I didn't care. Maybe those people needed to focus more on the pure hotness of Mary Elizabeth Winstead because, wow: so, so, so, so HOT. Get your priorities straight.
Simply put, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is hot. She/her chemistry with Miku Martineau does the carrying, with help from the action sequences, the fight choreography, and the visuals. The plot predictability isn't an issue.
This was really good but slightly generic in points hence why I've given it an 8.
Extremely predictable, but really fun to watch it. Worth it.
