This is a really good movie, better than it's being rated. McCarthy wrote and directed Spotlight and was a creator on The Loudest Voice in the Room. It's sweet and depressing and everything is done well in it. It's not an action movie and it's slow and long, but it's wonderful.

A solid, character-driven crime thriller which asks some poignant questions about right and wrong, and what we ultimately give up to meet those ideals. Some great chemistry between the leads, and the mystery plot device keeps the pace rolling throughout. Solid movie, surprised it's tracking at a 6.5/10. It's much better than that.

A great movie with Matt Damon's acting on point(as an outsider) .Miss these kind of casual-watch movies of 2010's..A Nice introspective movie.

Really good movie. It's a sad movie, and not at all a thriller, like it has been described, but nevertheless great acting all around. There are some things that aren't resolved, like where's the guy in the end that actually did kill the girl, and what are the police doing to find him, but that isn't really as important for the story, and not really what the movie is about... Despite being a bit slow, I loved it....

Full disclosure, I think Matt Damon is one of the most undervalued actors in the business. Just look at his range of performances - the butt of the joke in OCEANS, a man reduced in DOWNSIZING, a meticulous and idealistic car designer in FORD V FERRARI, an action star in the BOURNE franchise, and now, a redneck American trying to make good for his daughter in a foreign world. Matt Damon is a good actor. This is a good movie. The acting is right on it’s mark. The tone is gritty. The pace is heartfelt but real. I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10.

_Stillwater_ was good. Long, but a well-made movie.
I remember hearing about this when it came out, and being from Oklahoma, it was a big deal here; so, I thought it was just a story about an Okie working oil rigs. Nope.
The movie really drops you into a story not knowing what is going on, to the point where I thought I missed a scene or the stream skipped a chapter. Nope. That's just how the story is told. One moment we're in Oklahoma, the next we're in France. I was super confused by this, but once the story gets moving, the details are revealed, and it never slows down.
For the most part this is a heavy drama. There is a crime element to it, but not in an action sense - think _Taken_, but then remove Liam Neeson, because we're working within reality here.
Matt Damon is really carrying the movie, and he is phenomenal. Being from Oklahoma, yeah, he nailed it.
This is fully a character-based, emotional drama. Don't expect _Taken_ or _Rambo: Last Blood_.
I can't think of another film to compare this to, however, if you like drama with moments of mystery/crime, this is a good pick.

Matt Damon plays a tough, quiet man who seems out of step with the world around him. He travels to France to help his daughter, who’s caught up in a complicated legal case. This could’ve been a flat, cliché role, but Damon brings nuance, restraint, and realism to the character.

The film starts off like a straightforward thriller, almost like a procedural, but soon shifts direction. What begins as an investigation becomes a much more intimate story about human connections and unspoken pain. That change works in some scenes, but in others it feels jarring—the tone wavers and not everything flows naturally.

The script brings up strong themes: guilt, cultural differences, the weight of family, the desire for redemption. But it doesn’t always handle them well. Some parts drag, and others are rushed, leaving certain moments without the emotional impact they seem to aim for.

Still, there are some really effective scenes, especially when the film slows down to focus on everyday life. It’s in the quiet details—a glance, a short exchange, a hesitant gesture—where the story finds its emotional core. Camille Cottin brings warmth and honesty to her role, and her chemistry with Damon gives the film some of its most heartfelt moments.

As it moves forward, the movie steps away from being a thriller and turns into something more reflective. It’s about second chances, about trying to understand people who feel completely foreign. It doesn’t all land, but there’s a sincerity running through it. Maybe it’s not perfect—but it does leave something behind.
