Billy Elliot

County Durham, England, 1984. The miners' strike has started and the police have started coming up from Bethnal Green, starting a class war with the lower classes suffering. Caught in the middle of the conflict is 11-year old Billy Elliot, who, after leaving his boxing club for the day, stumbles upon a ballet class and finds out that he's naturally talented. He practices with his teacher Mrs. Wilkinson for an upcoming audition in Newcastle-upon Tyne for the royal Ballet school in London.

This is a beautiful film with a lovely story that I fell in love with the first time I watched it. It's spectacular and very well done. I would be surprised if one were to watch it and not shed a tear. The message and story is so lovely and the journey Billy goes on is similar to one that I'm sure many people have shared. This is one of the only films that has ever given me butterflies in my stomach both during and after watching it, it's incredible, and I was able to connect with Billy's character.

What a beautiful movie! For once, I have not been put off by any of the actors, they are all amazing. I especially was amazed by Jamie Bell and Gary Lewis.

Excellent film.

I don't think it's anything sensational, but there's no doubting 'Billy Elliot' tackles key issues and comes out with flying colours in that regard. Everything there makes you truly care for the titular character.

Billy is played by Jamie Bell, who gives a fantastic performance. Julie Walters is great too, portraying Sandra. Gary Lewis and Jamie Draven are also notable for their work here, even if their characters are a little too one-dimensional for the majority.

The plot is terrific and told in a superb way, with impressive cinematography. The only thing I'm not sold on is the dialogue, which is odd in parts; particularly with Billy and Debbie (Nicola Blackwell). I appreciate they don't patronise the children, but it's too far the other way with some of the speech; too forced to sound like an adult.

Nonetheless, it's a brilliant film and one you should definitely watch.

Keep wanting to compare this to the Commitments and it doesn't stack up. I liked it but not floored by it.

How is this rated a 7? It's a modern classic!
