Getting to Know You

When his drunken ex-girlfriend won't leave him alone, a man asks a married woman staying at the same hotel to pretend to be his wife. What could go wrong? It's not like two strangers spending a weekend in a small town could possibly fall in love - Getting To Know You is a delightful love story for grownups starring Natasha Little, Rupert Penry-Jones and Rachel Blanchard.
On my website I have a "best" tag and a "favorite" tag. A movie can absolutely be in one category but not the other. This film is the perfect example of a movie that isn't necessarily in the "best" category but is in the "favorite" category. The movie begins with a chance meeting in a hotel lobby. I man ends up needing a small favor from a woman he doesn't know. There is an innocence and a sweetness in the favor and the act of giving it that I think disarms the viewer. While on the surface we've probably seen many parts of this movie before I can't say that I've seen it done better. There are some funny parts but at no point does it ever aspire to be a comedy. There are some tender moments but it never turns into something that you'd find on the Hallmark channel.
Beyond all of that what really makes the film unique is the ridiculous chemistry between the two leads. I can't remember the last time I was so invested into a story like this - probably Blue Jay. i was even shocked at the turn that the ex-girlfriend gets later in the film as she appeared to be a throwaway character.
