Always wanted to see this movie. It is a political movie and also a love story. The movie takes place in Russia and the love story is wrapped up in politics. A good movie if that’s your thing. I enjoyed it.

Beautiful to look at, but none of the characters are redeemable. Cheating on his wife, Doc Z is absent from most of his marriage. Rod Steiger's character rapes a woman. One character is one of the most brutal Commie generals....it's reprehensible people surrounded by beautiful landscapes and cinematography. If you must watch it, make sure it is a good clear transfer or you will miss the best part.

A classic in monumental movies of the 1960s. Russian literature without a single Russian actor. For lovers of the genre.

Not a big fan of these enormous Lean epics, but this was fine. It's all a bit repetitive and turgid and I never believed the central romance--odd choice to not see the two fall in love initially. It's all sort of very Gone with the Wind, but snow, and the politics of the Revolution all felt very sterile and remote. I think it never really felt like there were any stakes? That final house was a cool piece of set design though.

An overrated, boring classic film. Unless you're glutton for punishment, skip this one.
