R.M.N.

A few days before Christmas, having quit his job in Germany, Matthias returns to his Transylvanian village. He wishes to involve himself more in the education of his son, Rudi, left for too long in the care of his mother, Ana, and to rid him of the unresolved fears that have gripped him. He’s also eager to see his ex-lover Csilla and preoccupied about his old father, Otto. When a few new workers are hired at the small factory that Csilla manages, the peace of the community is disturbed, underlying fears grip the adults, and frustrations, conflicts and passions erupt through the thin sliver of apparent understanding and calm.

>*"It's a matter of hygiene."*

Depressing, provocative and frustrating. ***R.M.N.*** (meaning M.R.I. in english) is a story about childhood trauma, masculinity crisis, intolerance, xenophobia, racism, and has a lot of multi-ethnic dynamics/tensions. At times it does feel like it's juggling with too many themes.

It took me half the runtime to get into it, it's a very slow start with no hook. The performances are all good, filmed nicely, overlong, love the snowy setting and the little village location. The town hall debate scene was the best moment in the movie, pretty intense and impressive sinse it was done in one long take (±20 minutes). The scene right after the debate made me shed a tear, nicely done.

Overall this had it's moments but the themes and story don't really come together as it should in the end and it feels messy and unsatisfying on so many levels.

Like bread dough that refuses to rise, it just kind of sits there and I don't know what to make of it.

This is a movie whose whole purpose is to prove racism exists, but I already knew that so... I guess it was wasted on me?

To present a well-known problem yet not offer any solutions or give the audience any autonomy when confronting the issue.is a form of cinematic fascism.

(Although, please normalize putting subtitles for different languages in different colors. R.M.N. did it with Romanian in white, Hungarian in yellow and all others in pink. The Handmaiden did the same thing to differentiate between Japanese and Korean subtitles and I think this practice should be generalized.)
