The Mask of Zorro

It has been twenty years since Don Diego de la Vega fought Spanish oppression in Alta California as the legendary romantic hero, Zorro. Having escaped from prison he transforms troubled bandit Alejandro into his successor, in order to foil the plans of the tyrannical Don Rafael Montero who robbed him of his freedom, his wife and his precious daughter.

This is one of my favorite movies of all-time. It has everything I want in a movie: heroism, beauty, sword-fighting (which I consider to be the best form of movie combat), chases, daring, humor, great actors, compelling story, good vs evil, revenge, mystery, romance, excitement... I don't know what more it could have.

Antonio Banderas is excellent in the role of Alejandro/Zorro, taking him from a drunk to a dashing hero, Anthony Hopkins adds class as Diego de La Vega (the original Zorro), Catherine Zeta-Jones has never looked more beautiful--but she's not just some damsel in distress, as her duel with Zorro in the stables shows. Don Rafael and Captain Love make great villains.

I just LOVE this movie.

A delight of a movie. Brilliant performances from the whole cast
Banderas really nailed his character in particular. His roguish charm and banter was great.

So much fun! Felt like an 8 year old boy again watching this. Great action, stunts, music, cast, plot. Sure, it’s not perfect, but who cares? It’s Zorro!

There's a lot to like. Actual stunt work, great casting, a plot...

I enjoyed the first few swashbuckling set-pieces but by the end they were growing tiresome.

Catherine Zeta Jones has never looked better and she gets an actual character to play, rising to the challenge.

Antonio Banderas is charming and suave. But has no chemistry with CZJ.

Anthony Hopkins is about 20 years too old for the role. I pity his stunt double!

The hammy humour let's this down. I understand it's a nod to the original Flynn Zorro but it is now showing its age as a result.

They don't make them like this anymore though and that's a shame.

Not great or epic by any means but still an entertaining and fun to watch action-adventure movie. As I stated many times before I like those movies for what they are, their honestness and they way they were made.
