[Watch AUT '23] The approach of the film is closer to a pacifist look than to a reflection of war conflicts, in a story that manages to uproot humanity in the midst of the dehumanization of war, through the relationship between an introverted Austrian soldier and an orphaned little fox. But far from being look too complacent, it also reflects the background of war unreason that contrasts with Franz's much kinder look. And it captures on its 4:3 screen that gives a nostalgic tone, the beauty of an environment buried by the roar of bombs.

Young boy gets sent away by his father for his labour because he can't afford having a child. Years later, the now-adult enlists in the army and while taking care of an orphaned fox tries to reconcile with his past.

First of all, this isn't a movie about war - but about an uprooted boy who's trying to discover who he is and where he belongs.

Frankly, the movie could have been set during any war, it doesn't matter which one. One could argue that the scenes with the French woman were a bit unnecessary since it is indeed a bit cringeworthy because of the inherent power imbalance between the German invaders and the French natives of the regions. But again, this movie isn't about Nazis, resistance or whatever war-related.

Of course, the fox's the star of the movie - but I actually was moved by the ending when Franz returns back home and finds a letter by his by then late father... who actually learned to read and write just in order to write that letter.

A 2 hour Nazi friendly movie named The Fox where we see a cute fox for 15 minutes? That is a disgrace.
