My Year of Dicks

An imaginative 15-year-old is stubbornly determined to lose her virginity despite the pathetic pickings in the outskirts of Houston in the early '90s.

A very honest and frequently uncomfortable discussion surrounding the confusion and desperation of growing sexual maturity. This hurt to watch, but in a good way! Each of the individual scenes do an incredible job of informing you of the characters and the struggles they're enduring. Not even just with our mc, Pamela, but also with her best friend, Sam. It helps you grow super fond of and care about them, which only makes the final scene of the movie hit that little bit stronger. Add in some super stylized animation and incredible sound design, and you have a great time on your hands.
There are frequently very similar types of films nominated in the Oscar short film categories. "My Year of Dicks" positively stands out right from the start. The film is quite funny in places, has a unique and diverse animation style, and, most importantly, has an intriguing premise. It's about a 15-year-old girl from a Houston suburb who recounts her attempts to lose her virginity in 1991 over the course of five episodes. Everything is done in a very sympathetic way; it's a nice little coming-of-age story. I was thoroughly entertained by the film.
Quite a unique little film. The animation is in varied styles for the various chapters, the writing is quite funny, the girl’s experiences rings true-to-life in a very personal way. Best parental sex talk ever!
