"Apocalypto", but set on the Hawaiian Islands and co-created/starring Jason Momoa, who I think has reached a new peak in his career with this performance. The cinematography and score hooked me in instantly, but I waited till episode 4 to review because I couldn't tell if the confusion was intentional or not. In short...it is and it isn't. The actual historical events are immensely convoluted, but the addictive dramatisation and raw episodic plot progression work wonders. The clear direction in the characters, script, and acting, as well as the almost absolute level of accuracy in locations, casting, languages, costumes, props, and story, is nothing but admirable and impressive. Apple TV really isn't showing any signs of slowing down when it comes to releasing award-winning content.
So... No one watched "Shogun"? What's wrong with people? WAAAH I NEED MY ENGLISH, I'M ILLITERATE AND CAN'T READ WORDS WAAAH
This show is great.
I’ve just finished episode 3 and I’m hooked.
Wasn’t sure initially as this series is in Hawaiian with subtitles so you have to actually pay attention, not something you can have on in the background BUT this is a GOOD thing as It deserves your full attention.
Cinematography, history, storylines and characters all superbly delivered and you fully appreciate the decision to keep the native language maybe even a bit dismayed when Kaʻiana learns some English.
Even though it’s an age old story of man’s greed for power and / or to own what’s not his, it still remains unpredictable. So far anyway.
I can’t wait to find out what’s next for Kaʻiana.
Time to learn a new language on Duolingo 😉
If you are in any doubt, just give it a go. It will surprise you.
I’ll reserve rating for end of season.
Excellent and every episode is cinematic and needs to be watched on a bigger screen.
Yes it’s mostly subtitles like Shogun but are you going to let that exclude you from another Apple TV excellent show? Don’t be lazy
I think people are upset because it is not in Englsh, it is in Hawaiian English with subtitles. I was confused at first, but will watch when I can focus on reading - I am seeing negative reviews so far to this, so I wanted to call it out, but the show seems interesting
Edit: SO I have gotten through episodes 1 and 2, and I have to say that if Apple doesn't fuck it up, this is a solid show.
looks like another season of SEE
I had a feeling this show is going to be epic. The first 2 episodes delivered. I’ll reserve my rating and final verdict until I watch the rest of the episodes as they are released. So far, I loved the storytelling and the cinematography of the show. Most of the dialogue is in the native language. Subtitles require a bit of attention due to this aspect, otherwise you’ll lose interesting plot points. This reminds me of the movie Apocalypto. A similar ironic vibe, where the natives were killing each other to own and rule land before the white man rocked up and stole everything for good.
Another show that has subtitles. I really don't care to read my TV show, so I will pass.
The pitch to Apple: Shōgun but with more skin.
6 votes and the show is not out. Ooook.
