Miss Austen

It was ok. Just not wow. The letter shenanigans was interesting, and the backstory of Cassandra, and the relationship with Jane, and her sister-in-law, but it was just moderately entertaining otherwise. If I knew what it would be like I wouldn't have watched it, but it passed the time. It does make me want to pick up Jane's collected letters that did survive, and a biog though, so that is something, but not the work loon which this is based.

Adapting Gill Hornby's novel, this miniseries explores the relationship between Cassandra and Jane Austen, but above all offers a portrait of the former as a character who has been blamed for the destruction of her sister's personal correspondence. Although it does not fall into the error of turning the characters into romantic heroines, the effort to recreate around both of them a recognizable environment to that of the novels, establishing parallels, harms the development of the characters, who never end up seeming completely real. And they come closer to a recreation of Jane Austen's works, thus losing the opportunity to offer a deep portrait beyond the references taken from literary fiction.
