Credit to Netflix on producing a binge-worthy drama series in Australia. I enjoyed the creative storytelling method and the visuals throughout.
Very bingeable. Great performances. Worth a watch.
The very ending of the show starts the standard text appearing on screen to highlight where all the real-life people the story is based on ended up, only to be interrupted by Kaitlyn Dever telling you that you can just Google it. This is a microcosm of how this series approaches the typical biopic format, constantly going out of its way to loudly try to break the rules. The series doesn't try to act vague about character motivations, giving very explicitly defined characters with their interiority fully on display. It also doesn't fixate on only the biopic's focus of Belle Gibson, utilizing an array of other characters who all feel like they are their own people outside of her. This works really well since the show does land emotional beats which I find are exceedingly rare in biopics, often times utilizing these other characters. At its core, the story is about a fairly heavy and dark topic, and it never minces how it feels about cancer, those who try to take advantage of it, or those who are just looking for hope. However, it also has an oddly dark sense of humor, with a surprising amount of comedic moments as well. It's also loaded with a ton of bombastic stylistic choices. At times, I never felt like they were necessarily wowing me, but they kept the show visually entertaining instead of allowing it to feel flat. Alycia Debnam-Carey is fantastic, but the most notable thing about this show is Kaitlyn Dever's stunning performance. I already knew she was a brilliant actress, but she's cut her teeth on more timid roles while in this, she manages to play a much more talkative and expressive character through a range of emotions. I can't wait to see what she does with Abby.
Binge watch the all thing. Really entertaining, well filmed, good rhythm and insightful, done with taste and respect. Worth watching.
Another great show in the arsenal of Denver with another great performance. Although the episodes are a bit long i binged it over the weekend and it was really good. The story telling was excellent with a unique and creative flow.People need to be aware of all this crap that goes around with the holistic wellness and the influancers pushing out everything to make them famous and for the likes.
I knew I recognized her from somewhere - it's the little Loretta McCready from Justified! What a performance, was not expecting this to be so good to be honest just based on the summary. Loved the last "scene", great idea.
Very interesting story, indicative of the multitude of phony influencers all over social media…
I dislike a lot of things when it comes to social media especially influencers so I really didn't think this show would hold any interest for me BUT I enjoyed every minute of it.
Fascinating insight into how people will do anything to get noticed online as well as into the self healing industry that these so-called influencers try to pedal out to people.
Definitely worth a watch.
Apple Cider Vinegar (2025) - ❤x6
This is a show about seriously horrible, vile, lying, disgusting, opportunistic, self-centered, stupid, idiotic, moronic, narcissistic, manipulative, con-(wo)man who only wants one thing in life - attention, admiration, money, and power.
Political bent incoming...
Now, if you are paying attention to what is happening in our world today in the USA you might think I was talking about #45/47 (and I am). Because he does exactly this kind of "influencing". #45/47 is nothing but the ultimate conning influencer on a grand scale.
The story itself is insane and sad - but seriously depressing to think that there are so many people out there that do exactly this sort of thing. This is why I pretty much hate all social media influencers.
How I rate:
1-3 ❤ = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6 ❤ = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8 ❤ = I expect you will like this too
9-10 ❤ = movies and TV shows I really love!
_Apple Cider Vinegar_ is excellent, well worth the insight into the predatory behavior of online wellness leeches. It's easy to believe that the show is based on a true story because in the age of the internet, people will do anything for attention. Kaitlyn Dever does an excellent Australian accent, next to no slip ups.
The show is necessary viewing in an era of misinformation, health scammers, and wellness influencers.
