> Tell 99 Truths to mask one lie

I wouldn't call this show a masterpiece but its gripping enough despite a predictive story and plot lines where entire world falls for one guy to take revenge ... no one has this much luck in the world . The mystery about
the third enemy being the benefactor
is predictable. The romance is palpable it exists only for the plot line and the chemistry between main leads gets worse as it progresses. I would compare this show with Nirvana in Fire only in regard that both shows neglect the female leads and solely progress on one man's revenge...

I loved the bond between Zang Hai and his three masters .. especially Gao Ming ; he made my cry...

For me, The Legend of Zhang Hai was one of the best dramas of 2025. The story kept me hooked from beginning to end, with each episode leaving me curious about what would come next. It’s rare to find a drama that maintains its pacing so well. But despite all the positive points, there were also some issues that can’t be ignored.

One of the main ones was the protagonist himself. He spent ten years training to carry out a revenge that the drama promised would be based on intelligence and strategy. But as soon as he arrives in the capital, he’s easily deceived. Sure, his training wasn’t complete, but even so, it’s clear he was too naive and lacked the necessary cunning. He was very well-educated, yes, with knowledge in many areas, but that didn’t translate into practical intelligence to manipulate, anticipate, or create convincing schemes. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, he becomes “smart.” There was no clear buildup for that transformation.

Another thing that bothered me was the fact that, after preparing for ten years, he still relied on luck in crucial moments. His first plan—and even some that followed—relied more on coincidence than real strategy. For a drama that sold itself as a cerebral revenge story, I expected more cleverness and less randomness.

As for the revelation that the man who saved him was actually the third enemy… I didn’t think the idea was bad. On the contrary, it’s a good plot twist. The problem was the execution. There were no clues or prior buildup, which made the twist feel too abrupt. The drama didn’t need to make it obvious, but it should’ve included subtle signs that, when revisited, made sense. In fact, I did suspect from the beginning that the savior could be the third enemy, but based on his actions throughout the story, that theory was basically discarded. In other words, the script worked to dismantle a valid suspicion, only to bring it back out of nowhere later, which took away from the impact of the reveal and hurt the overall coherence.

Overall, that was one of the main problems: many events felt like they came out of nowhere, with little to no setup.

Still, despite all that, the ending was satisfying. I really liked that the revenge actually happened, with no stalling, no forced forgiveness, and none of the usual overdramatized hesitation. He saw it through to the end, and that’s rare in dramas with this kind of theme. I only regret that he chose to leave the capital. I would’ve liked to see the character stay and continue evolving as a political or strategic figure.
