It's a misnomer calling this show a drama, it's stricly a documentary following the ups and downs of an LA based comedian. Sure, the life of Steven Brody Stevens is full of drama, but the show itself is just documenting it, it is neither crafting it nor is it shaping it in any form, this is more of a Reality show (in the actual meanng of the genre) than a drama or a documentary, really.
Why is this important? it is important for the viewer to know what to expect before going into the show, calling it "Comedy Central's first drama", calling it a dramedy doesn't help either.
The point is, this show is not scripted, you probably heard about Brody recently and wanted to check out more of his work, this is a good view into the life of a person who is very good at what he does (crowd warmup) but he is troubled with health issues, and how are these things affecting him and the people around him.
Is the show funny? occasionally, you'll laugh out loud, you'll enjoy it as much as you enjoy hearing the latest gossip, it's entertaining without a doubt. But sometimes it can be frustrating to watch because you're also seeing a real person dealing with real shit, these things are much easier to digest when they're about a fictional character. So if you're thinking of watching this to chill, this won't work for you, go watch a sitcom or something.
That is not to say it's a bad show, it's an interesting look into mental illness and how it affects people, Brody's positive energy is contagious and it flows out of the screen into you. Brody is the ultimate hype man, and the world is a little bit dimmer without him in it.
Push and believe. ENJOY IT!
Kind of hard to call this one. Halfway through the episodes, I'd say it could be considered an extended documentary on the effects of mental illness -- specifically bipolar disorder. If nothing else, it's an interesting watch should you have limited options.
Personally, if there were a season 2, I wouldn't be tuning in... ;-)
Although I recognized him from his cameo appearances in various other projects, I wasn't aware of who he was until after I heard he'd committed suicide in February 2019. Even though I didn't know him, the news of a comedian's death to suicide always gets my attention....especially someone who was so well known and respected in the comedy scene.
I'm really glad this record of him exists. RIP Steven James Brody.
Brody Stevens and Harris Wittels are the two people who current "alt comics" talk about missing the most.
