It's Dennis from IASIP transported into a classroom in Toledo! Generally, I find NBC sitcoms to be a little too vanilla, but this one pushes the envelope in a good way.
I am very not happy this was canceled. I enjoyed it a lot. The kids were the true stars - and made me laugh quite often. Yeah, it's not amazing, but hey it's better than most stuff
Delightfully ridiculous, feel good, and hilarious.
You know..I'm impressed..yeah..sometimes I forget, that even though you're alllllll dummer than me..there's still some value to your little brains
This is a show about the world’s weakest man. Jack Griffin is a failed Harvard professor who gained notoriety for losing a fight to an elderly man and just generally being an asshole. Sound familiar? Many have compared the premise and dynamics to the very popular show, Community. The show is a little similar, but lacks the meta commentary and “smart” writing of Community. I do not see this as a detriment, not every show needs to adhere to its inspirations. The show has some similarities, and some differences, like every show on Earth.
This is a sitcom, and it knows its format well. The adult cast is strong, and so are the students. At times it can be a little samey (characters like Heather and the other teachers tend to stick to the same basic schtick), but I never felt bored watching it. It has a strong plot, a firm understanding of when and how to be silly, and all the actors know their roles to a tee. I don’t know if it's an all-timer, but it is surely a cut above the rest.
Starting: "Man I hope this show has Glenn Howerton as unhinged as IT's always sunny in Philidelphia"
Ending: "Wow Glenn Howerton delivered".
Overall a good show for about 3, maybe a 3 and a half seasons, but mostly due to Jack Griffin, and his insane jealousy. The show focuses on a disgraced Harvard professor who wants to get back at the person who got his dream job, and that doesn't sound like it would last, but the writing on this show is great. Our main character never really "learns his lesson" he just moves from deranged idea to deranged idea. The class never really "Gets through to him" even if they stop a few of his worst plans. But overall the show work.
The one question mark on this show will be the side characters, only a few of the students truly stand out. Patton Oswald's principal only has a couple of great moment, but is used somewhat sparingly . His secretary is funnier, but used more in later seasons. There's a trio of female teachers who is always good for a laugh, but mostly this show rests on Glenn Howerton.
"But you said 3 and a half seasons". Yeah, unfortunately it feels like the wheels came off the show in season 4. Mostly due to telling uninteresting side stories about other characters. I'd still watch the whole thing the first time, but I'd probably the second half of season 4 on a rewatch. It's not "Bad" just not as funny or interesting.
I tried this out with the hope that Glenn Howerton would be able to get his insanity into this show, much in the same way Always Sunny shows a different view of the world.
After a season I can say Glenn Howerton shines here. You would assume that his revenge obsessed manic teacher persona would get old but he's able to keep it interesting for at least the first season.
Great to binge on Netflix so far.
Very average comedy, but I had fun watching it every week. I'll continue watching if it gets renewed
I don't know if is because I did a binge-watch of the two seasons, but I
missed a lot Colin and Devin in the second season
. Heather is awesome!
Honestly, I am quite disappointed to see that this was cancelled. Despite never being great, it was good casual viewing. It also pushed the boundaries of network television similar to The Mick a couple of years back. If you are a fan of the slightly raucous sitcom, I do recommend this one to pass some time.
Average Season Review: 7.25/10
Recommendation: Watch If You Need Content (For The Mick Fans)
