The Ancient Magus' Bride

Hatori Chise has lived a life full of neglect and abuse, devoid of anything resembling love. Far from the warmth of family, she has had her share of troubles and pitfalls. Just when all hope seems lost, a fateful encounter awaits her. When a man with the head of a beast, wielding strange powers, obtains her through a slave auction, Chise's life will never be the same again. The man is a "magus,"a sorcerer of great power, who decides to free Chise from the bonds of captivity. The magus then makes a bold statement: Chise will become his apprentice--and his bride!

This anime changed me into a spirit? A monster? A ghost? A fairy? I see myself in many of these characters. As sad to warm Chise. A monster with a soul Elias. The longing some of these characters have is palpable. Some say life is suffering but maybe what it really is is longing. Ruth longs for his sister, tho he wasn't really human in the first place. The Sidhe holds on as long as she can to a human who must die. Silky longs at first for a family that died but finds a way to go on, haunting a new house. I'm still trying to understand Joseph, perhaps his totally thwarted longing twisted him. He's evil as a side effect of being tragic. Chise's statement "I am here!" "Watashi wa koko" Something about that seems to be what its all about. It's my new philosophy. This show haunts me but pleasantly, beautifully. Peace :-)

I don't know why i never heard about it .. it's great, magic in a victorian setup (with bits of actual society), nice art (most of time), solid recommandation (even if i'm not a big fan of that type of anime usually)

This is the best take on the old "the beauty and the beast" concept I've ever had the pleasure of watching (and, more than watching, feeling).

It was another great Slice of Life and has a lot to offer. The low impact action scenes gave this anime an unique aspect.
Although a bit short and somewhat repetitive, it's story will definitely gave you a push to watch more and more.
I would definitely recommend this to everyone.

A really beautiful and exciting anime.
I'm not a fan of the romantic genre but it involved me through and through.
I loved the protagonists, especially Elias, and each story is simply touching.

This Anime has a weird pacing. And introduces characters left and right nonstop. It is not a bad one but sometimes it feels like a summary of a much bigger anime.

EDIT: All of this refers to Season 1, this was written before Season 2 ever aired.

This started off well, I enjoyed the premise of someone all of a sudden becoming a mage's apprentice while also teaching him about humanity (Though starting it all off by being bought as a slave girl was utterly bizarre). But in the end it didn't really do much with this premise, I was excited to see Chise learn spells and so on but we don't really get to see much teaching at all, a ton of the times she just miraculously just somehow knows what to do.

After about 6 episodes I found myself thinking it was getting repetitive, same formula over and over. Chise gets in some trouble, new character arrives to help her, it ends on cliff hanger and problem is solved in the next episode's first 5 minutes. A ton of side characters left as fast as they arrived not even giving you a chance to learn to like them and making them feel like the "Deus Ex Machina" of the week. After the first half it just ends up being super slow in my opinion which causes it to be unengaging. Some plot points even end up being pointless in the end. For example,
we see her spend some time making a wand and I believe we only ever get to see her use it less than 3 times
. Maybe it's just me but I actually got the impression that this series couldn't make up its mind on whether it wanted to be episodic or actually carry an overarching plot.

I honestly thought the 3 episode OVA from 2016 was a million times better than these 24 episodes. I have not read the manga, but I've heard from fans of it that this anime series feels aimless without the knowledge of the manga and some viewers may end up confused. In the end this really just feels like Twilight in anime form.
