Season 1 – Watching this, you felt sorry for Debra – she was so soft spoken and quiet and was being taken advantage of by John. I didn’t care much for Veronica (this was the first time I had seen Juno and her stuck up attitude turned me off of the character), and Terra was …well, that voice just got on my nerves. However, in the end, she is there to get final justice on John.
Season 2 – WOW, that was an emotional roller coaster. Yes, Dan was a POS – in the flashbacks, he Betty’s life miserable, with the promise that things will get better. And they did. But by then, he was a LAWYER – and was willing to play ALL the dirty tricks of the lawyers to come out ahead.
But he wasn’t without fault. Watching Betty spiral out of control – well, as someone who has experience with crazy ladies in my past (one had a hysterical pregnancy, claiming I was the spiritual father; another trying to fake a pregnancy to get me back in her life, and my Ex Wife, who was bipolar and had SEVERE anger management issue), watching her made me thing that Dan did the right thing, by getting out and getting the kids. Sadly, she ended up doing what I thought my Ex Wife would do
I was surprised that this movie felt so much like a classic Lifetime movie. I really did not enjoy it. However, if you enjoy watching beautiful people act, you will like this one. Everyone is lovely; grandma, mom, daughters, even John!
This is a competent series based on a true story and this should raise some flags to all those direct-TV movies we got in the past that were based on a true story. Qualitywise it's often above those movies but quite frankly it all feels like cardboard, with cardboard people. It's strange cause these characters have led compelling lives and faced something very unique... Unfortunately it doesn't feel that way.
I think the main problem of this show is that there's little to no "severity"... it's all a bit too realistic to be interesting despite the fact the story and actions of these characters is incredible. The things John does and experienced aren't tame at all but they come over as such.
It's a chore to get through at times but you'll stick around to see the conclusion of this story. The final two episodes are much more exciting than the previous ones, spreading these over the whole season would have been a better choice.
Season 1 was very good from beginning to end. 9/10
Season 2 - Betty was terrible. Episode 1 bit of a mess, but important. Ep 2 and 3 good, but dragged out. Ep 4 and 5 could've been shortened to 10 mins total without losing any part of the story. Ep 5 good. Ep 6 delete. Ep 7 and 8 could have been edited down to about 20 minute tops.
The entire second season could have been done in 3 episodes and it would have been good. As it is it's so tedious and full of irrelevant and pointless content I really struggled to get through it. My best advice: skip season 2 entirely - it's just a complete waste of time. 1/10
